Metropolis

This anime, based upon a popular manga by Osamu Tezuka, has parellels to such movies like Blade Runner, but severly falls short in depth. While it is an incredibly detailed anime artistically, this anime would have been better off to stay as a manga.

The story follows a detective and his young sidekick on the lookout for an evil scientist who resides in a huge city known as metropolis. They arrive perfectly at a time where the people are trying to revolt against their fascist leader, who is trying to create the perfect humanoid robot. This robot would then succeed him in ruling the city.

However, the fascist leader's son tries to sabotage this project, and the detective and his sidekick are caught in the middle of a skirmish that could destroy the world.

Blade Runner, anyone? There are few new ideas in this movie, but it is still an interesting premise.

Shiunsaka Ban - A detective from Japan who is searching for Dr.Laughton

Kenichi - Shiunsaka's nephew and partner, He encounters a girl named Tima, when he comes upon a burning lab.

Duke Red - A power figure in Metropolis, he hired Dr.Laughton to create a "perfect" android.

Tima - An android made by Dr.Laughton, who meets Kenichi

Rock - Duke Red's foster son and leader of sercurity.

These characters depth is about as large as Rock's name. There is little orignality in any of them, and care little what happens to them.

Metropolis' animations is in no way traditional. The people are reminiscient of older disney movies, but on a highly detailed backdrop.

Despite the animation in this movie being highly interesting, a more traditional form of animation would have completely changed the tone of this movie.

While the subbed version was released in theatres, it is one of the few subs that may be inferior to a dub.

Why? Simply because the animation is quite detailed, and the subtitles leaves the viewer little focus on the look of Metropolis, and instead make them focus on the shallow story.
