📖 Overview

Awesome!!! Till now I only heard about it and now I’ve seen it… man, I think I forgot to breathe through the first OVA (I did somehow manage to breathe through the next two). Did I say it’s awesome? It’s even more... A story about people using supernatural powers and hi-tech machinery to fight against a guy that wants to rule the world.

🎬 Storyline & Narrative

The story starts when a strange guy attacks the white house thinking, it was the library. Recognizing his mistake he gets on the way to correct it. The story follows Yomiko Readman. The girl who loves books... I mean, she has her own library and constantly searches for new ones. On one of her searches she stumbles upon a book by Beethoven and soon find out she’s not the only one that wants it. She gets attacked by a swarm of wasps led by a strange guy on a grasshopper, who is also after the book. Later on it gets obvious she’s a member of a secret organization devoted to protecting the world against all evil. Her boss, Joker, gets her teamed up with Miss Deep and Drake Anderson on a special book retrieval mission that will lead them all over the world.

👥 Characters & Dynamics

The characters are really worth caring for... The design is excellent, and so are their features.

Yomiko Readman – The stories main hero. Her ability to manipulate paper gave her the codename The_Paper. She can do amazing things with it. She loves her books soooo much! She’s got that “in love” look in her eyes every time she notices a book she doesn’t own.

Nancy Makuhari – Supporting role. She can dive through matter like walls, floor, bodies... anything. Her ability gave birth to her codename Miss Deep.

Drake Anderson – The team’s commando. He’s the muscle guy. He has no supernatural powers so he relies on guns and explosives.

Joker – Their boss. Typical Englishman. Cool under any circumstance and, of course, he loves tea (and his secretary loves making it for him).

Gennai Hiraga – A Japanese samurai resurrected from the dead to serve the bad guys. He can control electricity and thus create lightning.

Otto Ririentahl – The German flying baron (or something... I forgot my history lessons), also resurrected to serve evil. He can do amazing acrobatics with his plane.

Genjo – A legendary priest... you guessed... resurrected and evil! His special powers include levitation and a magic pole, that he can use as a weapon.

Big Boss – Hehehe, I’m not telling you his name… I would be spoiling too much.

🎨 Animation & Visual Direction

I won’t lose any words on animation because it good. Period.

🎵 Voice Acting & Soundtrack

No comment on the voice acting ‘cos it’s PERFECT! (Japanese, that is. I didn't take a look at the dub 'cos I hate those).

🔴 What We Disliked: OK... I know there’s got to be something, but I just can’t find it :P
💬 Early-2000s Fandom Pulse Community Rating: ★ 4.3/5 (3 historical responses)
• Community Praise: Now I know where you get your The_Paper nick from! A girl main star! A geek girl! I'm loving this. I'd love to see what this Miss Deep looks like too, hehe, I can't help but love that name. Now the title makes sense too. Read or Die. :) Good job • Read or Die is a great OVA. It's short w/ only 3 episodes, but the quality of the artwork is top-notch. It's really great animation. There's also great style to the show in the choreography of the fight scenes and the way the characters use their superpowers in such COOL ways! I would recommend this anime to anyone thinking about watching anime for the first time. The action scenes and artwork are great! Oh yeah, and it's got a relatively good story also!
• Contentious Points: Cool but i think there isn't enought picture of this great anime !!! Continue a make always better !!! ;-)
