Grave of the Fireflies
Overview
A historically based story of two children during the war in Japan when America began attacking the mainland.
Storyline & Narrative
Set during the American's firebombing raids of Japan, Grave of the Fireflies follows two children, Seita and Setsuko, through their trials after being orphaned during a bombing.
Seita works hard to be the big brother his little sister needs, and it's a heart warming story of making the most of what you have.
The story also brings to light some of the crushing realities of the war, and it's difficulties.
Characters & Dynamics
Seita is well portrayed as an older brother trying to provide for his little sister during their hard times. He truly does everything he can for her.
Setsuko is his 4 year old sister, who truly loves her older brother, and looks to him for love, safety, and life.
The other characters include neighbours, other people in the village etc, and all have a real feel to them, nothing outrageous or bizarre.
At times, realising what people can be like behind your back is hard, and cold.
Animation & Visual Direction
The art style and animation closely suit the mood of the tale. Though they may not be typical anime, they are nonetheless well done, focused on keeping the story realistic.
Voice Acting & Soundtrack
There's nothing outrageous in the voice acting, and again, this helps keep the anime grounded in reality.
